Madhavan: Hunk of the Month

Posted by Chika On 9:33 PM 0 comments

We love him, don't we? That naughty smile and disarming boyish charm, just makes him ever so endearing and we just let ouselves fall in love with him again and again! He's one awesome actor too. In Alaipaiyuthe and then Minnale, he came across as the perfect lover-boy material. Yes so he gets furious with his wife in one and sort of lies to his girlfriend in the other, but we oggled at him anyways! In Yennavale we saw a different sort of Madhavan, a silent sort of guy, but with Dum Dum Dum, he was once again on top of his Prince Charming act! His comic side is quite entertaining, and in Naladhamayenthi he just stole the show, with his naive Indian cook portrayal that has us laughing all the way.
But it was Run and Thambi that caught our attention more, because we saw a completely different Maddy. The action hero Madhavan that we just could not relate to the Maddy we knew shocked us by being all macho and menacing. His best performance however is contained in three classic movies, Anbe Sivam, Kannathil Muthamittal and Evano Oruvan. Maddy is no regular mass man, he has a formidable fan following who love that impish grin and admire his passionate acting. In Anbe Sivam, Maddy played Ars so well, that we actually despise of him on account of his small mindedness. In Kannathil Muthamittal, he underplayed the role so well, not even one emotion was over the top. And in Evano Oruvan, we trully sympathise with his character, even though we do feel at times he could have saved himself the trouble is he was a little bit more pliable. And it's in these feelings that he evokes in his audience that his victory lies.
And Madhavan's fan following is not restricted to Tamil audiences alone. Actually he is a household name among Hindi audiences, thanks to TV shows like Sea Hawks and Ghar Jamai long before his cinema stint. In Hindi too he has a formidable place with movie like Rang De Basanti, Guru and Mumbai Meri Jaan.
Madhavan continues to captivate his audiences in Tamil and Hindi. His latest release Yavarum Nalam/13B has him dabbling with the thriller-horror genre, a complete departure from his usual style of films. Maddy will be soon seen in some very interesting films like Naan Aval Adhu and Guru En Aalu in Tamil and Teen Patti and Three Idiots in Hindi. His Hindi movies are with acting stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan respectively.

Comedy programming has emerged as the new flavour of Tamil television. Two new comedy channels - Aditya and Siripoli were launched last month, dedicated exclusively to humour by Sun TV Network and Kalaignar Television Network respectively.
A spokesperson from Sun TV Network says, "The aim is to provide laughter and fun to millions of viewers across the state. The Aditya programming includes comedy film clips, comedy songs, candid camera and stand up comedy shows."
Sujit Kumar, director, Social Media India, which has the marketing rights for Siripoli, says, "Tamil audience is excited about the humour quotient. We saw the potential for a full-fledged comedy channel and launched it."

In a bid to lure more viewers, most of the Tamil general entertainment channels (GEC) and music channels, have switched over to airing comedy clips from Tamil films between 9.30 pm and 11 pm during the last one year.

All those channels which replaced daily soaps with comedy clips have registered a remarkable rise in their TRPs. In the recent time, all the women-oriented daily soaps have shown a decline in viewership, according to the research data by TAM Media.

In the Tamil Nadu market, what sells best is Tamil film comedy clips of Vadivel, Vivekh, Senthil and Goundamani, Nagesh and the golden oldies — N S Krishnan, Thangavelu, M R Radha and Thengai Sreenivasan. The comedy scenes of Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and Vijay are also extremely popular among young viewers.

Sun TV Network already has a comedy channel, called Comedy Thirai, which operates only for its DTH platform Sun Direct. Meanwhile, both Aditya and Siripoli are available across cable and leading direct-to-home (DTH) platforms.

Chennai, Mar 11: Charging him with demeaning its members, the ‘physically challenged welfare association’ here has asked director Bala to apologise for the scenes depicting the mute and blind in poor light in his film, Naan Kadavul.

The association in a statement threatened legal action if the director did not come out with an apology and delete the offending portions in the film. Association representatives ‘Engineer’ Gopinath and Ramesh Veeramani said the film projected a negative image of the physically challenged, as though such people had no option but to take to begging or prostitution to eke out a living.

There have been any number of success stories born out of hard work and honest enterprise, but Bala ended up killing his visually-challenged heroine just to save her from the central character played by Arya, the association said.

Bala in an interview said his film was a true picture of the organised beggary racket and was inspired by first-hand account.

The success of Subramaniapuram has encouraged many a producer to go in for period films. The film set in the eighties is this year’s biggest box office hit and as usual other’s having followed suit. Madrasapattinam directed by Vijay, recently launched is set in the pre- independent period and director Chimbudevan’s Irumbu Kottai Muraatu Singum is set in the 17th century. A film nearing completion is Ayirthil Oruvan which has major portion set in 18th century. It is directed by Selvaraghavan and has Karthi and Reema Sen

Tamil cinema has period films about historical characters and about Kings and their battles set in unspecified period but now stories of ordinary men set in the bygone era is something new to filmdom and the success of Subramaniapuram has inspired many felt film historian Film News Anandan. Kamal Hassan’s Hey Ram set in the partition days was a dud at the box office while his recent offering Dasavathram which starts off from the 12th century to the present era was a hit. Soon to hit the screen is Priyadarsan directed Kanchivaram set in the late forties speaks about the communist movement in the silk weavers town and Cheran directed Pokkisham has portions of the film happenings taking place during the seventies.
In 2006 Chimbudevan directed Imasai Arasan 3M Pulikesi a spoof on the palace politics set in the 18th century and was a blockbuster hit. Shooting a period film is no joke says Sasikumar who directed Subramaniapuram. “ I did lot of research about the way people looked in the Madurai of 80’s and also how the streets looked. I collected many memorabilia to put in the film scenes . Since I was doing a period film the producers would shy away because it costs more and here I had no star in the cast. So I decided to produce it myself,” says the director who recently was awarded for his work in a function organized by a Malayalam channel and a leading vernacular daily. A Tamil film director sitting with likes of Mammooty and Mohanlal and being the only non Malayalee to receive the awards was like a dream said Sasikumar.
